Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy finally had his say in selecting senior IPS officer V Dinesh Reddy as the new Director General of Police for Andhra Pradesh, following the retirement of K Aravinda Rao.
As per the seniority, K R Nandan of 1975 batch has to be appointed as the DGP. Nandan, a close relative of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, has not been chosen for obvious reasons: he is a Brahmin and since outgoing DGP is also a Brahmin, Nandan would not fit the bill.
Secondly, his appointment might also anger Madam Sonia Gandhi, who is dead against PV family. So, he was convinced to forego the DGP promotion.
There are two other seniors to Dinesh Reddy – Gautam Kumar of 1975 batch and Balwinder Singh of 1976 batch. Besides, A Sivasankar and Umesh Kumar, both of 1977 batch, are also contemporaries of Dinesh Reddy.
But the Chief Minister preferred Dinesh Reddy, again for obvious reasons: he would be more comfortable with a person of his own community. So, even caste equations over rule seniority in our state!
